My First 5k

I finally ran my first 5k! I've had this goal since 2010 and shortly after beginning training for it is when I had a herniated disc so I wasn't able to run at all. I was so sad thinking I would never be able to run a mile, much less a 5k...but nearly two years later, I finally went for it! I saw this race advertised on the back of a city bus one day and just decided that now was the time and I should just go for it. I talked myselt ouf of it several times, but I'm proud to say that I finished AND ran the entire time! That was my goal from the beginning- just to say I RAN it and didn't have to walk any of it. I didn't care about my time or anything.

It's funny to me now that the day of the race was absolutely freezing and raining...I trained for weeks and if it was raining outside I told myself I wasn't going to train in that mess...never once did it occur to me that Hello, this is Wales and it might actually be raining on the day of my race!! Ding ding ding! The girls were concerned for me and kept saying, "I hope you don't slip Mummy!" Haha. Needless to say, 10 minutes before the race I was thinking I must be the biggest idiot in Wales- along with 430 something other people.

The above picture is just as I finsihed and that is a forced-fake smile as I was about to fall over! The girls were so sweet cheering for me and for days Bailey thought I won the race because I got a medal. I kept telling her that everyone that participated got a medal, but she wouldn't buy it. As I started thinking about it, I thought you know, she's right. I did win. I beat my fears, insecurities and negative self talk and I DID IT.

I ran it in 36 min 38 seconds and as soon as it was over, I grabbed my medal and my shirt and went straight home for a hot shower and lunch! At first I said I would never run again, but now a few weeks out from it I keep thinking, "I can beat 36 minutes."  So, who knows, there might be another 5k ahead...marathons? No stinkin' way!
